Great Grandpa’s Story
His part in the North African Campaign in the Second World War.
Read his story at WW2 stories.
Getting the story onto the web was down to a fortunate chain of events:
By chance, brother Bill stumbled upon a great website showing the passenger list for RMS Franconia which sailed from Liverpool to Quebec on 29th April 1955. This web site – Lennon Wylie is managed by the daughter of one of those passengers. Bill and I were also passengers on that voyage with our Parents, Bill Senior and Tess.
I emailed the web site, and established contact with Mary who is particularly interested in military history. She very kindly offered to complete one of my unfinished tasks (my “Why are we so busy” blog), namely the transcription of my father’s old photocopy of his company’s campaign history. He co-authored this with two or three of his comrades-in-arms.
I am delighted to report that Mary has worked a minor miracle and has completed the task. The story can be found in its entirety on Mary’s web site on her WW2 stories page. I will be sharing this with our family and I am very grateful to Mary for her help. The story hopefully will be of interest to our friends and to others and is a tribute to the men of the company – and mascot “Major” – an adopted mongrel found roaming in the desert.
