Grandma was helping our grandson feed his lone goldfish. Grandson asked her to look at his fish’s eye. It was swollen and white. Grandma asked how old the fish was and he replied that the fish was about four or five. Grandma, in a hushed voice, said “He is very old”. He looked at her thoughtfully and said “Will he die?” Grandma said sensitively, “Everybody will die at some time”. He thought again and said, “Not everybody dies, Jesus never dies, Santa doesn’t die – and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy don’t die either do they?”
What can you say to that? “That’s true!”

In a recent chat with my nine-year old grandson, the subject of his great grandma (my mother) came up. I mentioned that she loved telling me funny (sometimes rude) poems and stories when I was his age. He asked me to tell him one, and after clearing the subject matter with his dad, I told him my favourite. Needless to say it was a great hit and he demanded that I write it down so he could read it out in class. He also suggested that I put it on the Grandparents’ Blog. In previous blogs, we have talked about various things that became more important when we retired but until now we have neglected to mention just how important the comfort of our feet has become. We both love to go for long walks and that is important to us since walking is really our only form of exercise. In fact, the secret to enjoying an active life seems to be choosing the right shoes for the right occasion – above all a shoe that is comfortable.

The most beautiful and interesting county in England! Growing up in Northumberland just after the second world war was an adventure for a young boy. With grandparents owning a B&B in Whitley Bay, Aunt and Uncle (teachers in Wooler) and our parents working in the Gosforth area, my brother and I had plenty of opportunities to travel around the county. Our favourite spots were the coast from Tynemouth to Whitley Bay and Warkworth to Holy Island. We also holidayed in Wooler, Beadnell, and Chollerford (near Hexham). As a student at King Edward VI in Morpeth, I loved history especially the Roman impact on the county, so Hadrian’s Wall country was my favourite.
